Welcome to the Renaissance and the outrageous, crowd-pleasing musical farce, Something Rotten!
Set in the 1590s, brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star known as "The Bard." When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical. But amidst the scandalous excitement of opening night, the Bottom Brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self, and all that jazz.

Audition Requirements:
• Please prepare one song from contemporary music theatre repertoire. While it’s preferable to sing something contemporary (ie avoid pieces in a classical style), what’s most important is that you bring something you are comfortable with, that will show you at your best.
• Please bring sheet music in your correct key, double-sided, hole punched and placed in a 3-ring binder. A pianist will be provided. Karaoke tracks will not be accepted as accompaniment.
• Those interested in the roles of Shakespeare or Bea will be asked to sing a short musical excerpt in addition to your chosen musical piece. The excerpt will be provided at the time of booking your audition.
• Only those auditioning for the following characters will be required to do a reading: Shakespeare, Nick Bottom, Nigel Bottom, Bea, Portia, Nostradamus, Brother Jeremiah, Lord Clapham and Shylock. Anyone interested in ensemble only will not be required to read.
• You will be provided with a reading from the script at the time of booking your audition so that you will have an opportunity to familiarize yourself with the text.
• Everyone will participate in a group dance audition. One group dance break will take place in the middle of each audition session. If your audition time is in the first half, you will be asked to wait in the lobby after your audition for the dance portion to begin. If your audition time is in the second half, you will be asked to arrive earlier – in time for the beginning of the dance audition.
• Please wear comfortable (stretchy) clothing and indoor shoes (no bare or sock feet) for the dance audition. Bring tap shoes if you have them.
• Please bring a theatre resume and recent headshot if available.
• Arrive in enough time to check in, get settled and complete the audition form (if you haven’t already done so).
Those auditioning must be 16 years old by June 1, 2023.

Call backs:
• You will be notified by phone by June 15th if you are required for a call back.
• PLEASE NOTE: Not all parts will require call backs. We will only call back those we need to see again. However, if call backs are required for a part you are interested in, you must be available for the call back in order to be considered for the role.
Casting decisions will be made following the call backs. All those who auditioned will receive the results of their auditions by June 18th. Those who have been cast will receive results by phone. All others will receive results via email.
Conflicts – please take the opportunity to tell us about all potential conflicts you may be aware of on your audition form, even if you’re unsure of the dates. Any conflicts reported after your acceptance into the show will be subject to Globe’s conflict policy - if you miss more than 3 rehearsals you may be asked to leave the show.
The Artistic Team:
Director/Choreographer: Michael MacLennan
For over 35 years, Michael has been an active member of the professional theatre community. He has directed and/or choreographed 44 productions to date. Selected credits include: The Addams Family, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, The Secret Garden, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Jekyll &
Hyde, She Loves Me, Legally Blonde, Spamalot, My Fair Lady, Hello Dolly, Rent & Wizard of Oz. As an actor, Michael has performed such roles as Guido in Nine, Cornelius Hackl in Hello Dolly, El Gallo in The Fantasticks, Will Parker in Oklahoma, and Perchik in Fiddler on the Roof. He was a member of The Stratford Festival acting company for two seasons and has appeared in several film and television projects. Michael is a member of The Canadian Actors Equity Association and ACTRA.
Music Director: Jordan May
Jordan is a writer, composer, keyboardist and Musical Theatre artist from Brampton, Ontario. With a background in theory, ensemble and piano, Jordan has written and scored six original musicals, as well as numerous works for wind and full orchestras. As a Musical Director, he was most recently seen conducting Globe Productions' A Christmas Carol in December 2022, as well as the world premiere of his musical Fixer. Jordan is thrilled to be returning to the orchestra pit at the John Elliott Theatre for this fun and hilarious show!
